Seasonal Care Of Your Dodge Dakota Pickup
Winter

| These pages will cover information
pertaining to the special care that I've noticed my
pickup and quite possibly yours, might need during the
different seasons of the year. On this the first installment I'll be covering winter. Depending on where your live, winter is quite possibly the most harmful of all seasons to your vehicles structure and internal motor components. The reason I thought that it might be worth setting up a page like this was that if you care about your puppy as much as I do mine you'd want to watch out for things that might cause damage or cost you money down the road. |
Salty Dog
Salt syrup is sprayed up on your car by the vehicle in front of you ( another good reason for not tail gating ), it is also distributed by all four wheels of your car to the underbody of your car, as well as the exterior finish. Salt is a corrosive chemical to all metals and finishes. It facilitates a chemical reaction to break down the mentioned surfaces to something you don't want or need. Left alone it can turn your new car into a used (looking) car in a short period of time. Most people take their car to car wash to get cleaned up after the salt has dissipated from the road. I imagine this type of cleaning is better than nothing but not a thorough as I like or what is really needed to remove the majority of the salt from the critical areas of your vehicle. It is my belief that some automated car washes are hazardous to the finish of you car and I believe that a good home style hand washing is the best way to go. |
Innards
During the winter season only washing the exterior finish of your vehicle is not enough.
Even though I had washed the outside an it may look spotless, I'm going to have to go the extra mile to have the job done right.
If you look at the above photo you'll notice a whitish substance spewed in various places ( it's like this all underneath). I'm going to have to get down on my hands and knees for this one. Remember after your done washing the exterior take that hose and rinse all the areas underneath that you can reach, spray it wet, let it absorb and soften then hit it hard (jet) it'll be well worth it. I'd like to point out how crucial this last step can be, because here is where road salt can really do the most damage. Here salt works it's way into every crack, taking its good old time to cause damage. Here it will rust the side panels, freeze up bolts & nuts with corrosion, reduce effectiveness of factory applied lubrication to areas such as break cables and mechanical linkage as well as a myriad of other aging processes. Left unchecked it will turn your puppy into an old dog. |
