Computer Modules
The computer module regulates the gas flow to your engine and controls the ignitions spark and spark advance. The electronic control module (ECM) in the vehicle looks at various sensors such as manifold vacuum, coolant temperature, throttle position and RPM, it then processes this information and adjusts spark timing, air/fuel ratio and other parameters according to the tables stored in the chip/module memory of what ever performance module you might get. The manufacturer of the chip you buy re-calibrate their tables to what they believe will tune the engine for maximum horsepower and torque under various driving conditions. Supposedly these extra increases to performance will enhance driveability, towing capabilities, reduce 1/4 mile times and provide improved overall efficiency. If you think your vehicle would benefit from this addition, you can order it online.
Just follow the link, click the make and year, work your way to Jet chips and modules: their currently available for 2.5 L / 3.9 L / 5.2 L / 5.9 L. I guess jet couldn't figure a way to improve on the 4.7 L engine. As to how affective they really are in increasing horse power and performance, I'm not really sure. You'd figure Chrysler wouldn't chinch on this one. So I'll be checking into this and will be updating this page with the information I find. Ken a fellow Quad Owner from Ohio, wrote: Dodge does make a high performance replacement computer for the Dakota. However the 4.7 liter HI-PO computer is on back order. It supposedly adds 18-22 horsepower and about the same in torque. It does require the use of 92 octane gas. A side benefit of this replacement computer is that it removes the 97mph top speed limiter off of Dakota. Also a internet site has listed many dodge accessories including the mopar replacement HI-PO computer. They also can do custom programming of your current computer for a fee. Jet computers also has a add on chip to attach to the current computer on your truck that is supposed to give similar hp and torque numbers. The rest of Ken's letter can be found in the Quad Owners Mail Section. If you have any information you'd like to share with me and the readers of this pages concerning computer modules, don't hesitate to write. |
