Pick Up Bed Liner

These pages will cover information on adding accessories to your Dodge Dakota Quad.

There's a lot of stuff out there for you to put on and into your Dakota, from useless to the practical, from gaudy to smart dress. I've got my style and you got yours, so I wont put down stuff I don't particularly care for and will try to give all the stuff a fair shot.

If you have an opportunity, check out your nearest pickup truck accessory dealer, as you can see in the picture below, there's a lot of tempting goodies.

Here's the first installment:

The first accessory that I will be covering in part, will be what you can put on top of the bed to protect the stuff that you put in your bed.

Being a contractor, I throw my tools in the back of my the quad cab, into three large plastic containers (about 18" x18" x 4' each) to be exact. ( what about a liner?) I don't particularly care to have my tools borrowed permanently out of the back of my pickup when I'm not around. So, I've been looking over my options, which boils down to installing a tonneau cover, fiberglass lid or a fiberglass cap.

Tonneau covers come in tarp like construction. Lids or Caps are generally made of fiberglass. Though the least expensive of the above options, Tonneau tarp style covers seem like they would be highly vulnerable to sharp objects, let say, something like a knife.

Well, I think my decision boils down to the fact that whatever I put on it, it ought to be made out of fiberglass. Now my next decision is to figure out whether to get the fiberglass lid or the fiberglass cap..

The fiberglass lid cover in my opinion, allows the the pickup to keep its resemblance to a pickup truck. The cap cover, again in my opinion, transforms the pickup look to that of an SUV or that of station wagon. The lid weights considerably less than the cap, making it easier to get your spouse to help you remove it for those times when you have to haul bulky items.

Honestly, at this point time I haven't really made a solid decision on which to get. The Fiberglass Lid looks sporty and secure, while the cap has the storage volume. If I had the money I probably get both, using the lid the majority of time and the cap for extended travel.

You should know that name brand lids can only be purchased from dealer/distributors, I imagine this is to assure a good installation for which the manufacture (A.R.E in particular) can offer a lifetime warranty. I've heard (gossip) that fiberglass lids can be order my mail/freight, but I'm not sure of the manufacture or of the quality.

After doing a little shopping around I found that a A.R.E. fiberglass lid installed, costs $585. + tax, about $300 less than a $880.A.R.E. fiberglass cap installed . I guess I'm going with a fiberglass lid. I haven't seen any on a Quad Cab to date, as a matter of fact I haven't really seen that many Quad Cabs on the road.

Below is a picture of a A.R.E. Fiberglass Lid on a Toyota pickup. It looks to be made quite well. When I get my lid, I'll post the story here.
